Bradley Homecoming parade video, 1952

Title

Bradley Homecoming parade video, 1952

Description

This film depicts the 1952 Bradley University Homecoming parade through downtown Peoria. Though carefully selected for exhibiting, the footage might contain harmful and racist images as well as examples of cultural appropriation.

Thousands of Peorians gathered downtown in the 1940s and 1950s to attend these annual float parades. Bradley’s first Homecoming celebration in November 1921 generated a parade stretching six city blocks with Peoria's Municipal Band leading the way. A cash prize was awarded to the best decorated car, which usually meant a lot of red and white steamers.

At first, there were two Homecoming parades – an automobile parade and a “hobo parade.” For the latter and offensively named parade, students dressed to reflect their imagined "hobos" and beat on tin plates. The film clip of the automobile parade has been edited to fit within Omeka's file size requirements. Researchers may view entire files.
