Horology Hall without the clock face photograph, 1898
Title
Horology Hall without the clock face photograph, 1898
Description
This photograph of Horology Hall (now Westlake) offers a rare glimpse of the building before installation of the clock. Professor J. R. Parsons built and installed the clock mechanism in the five-story tower, but the clock never kept good time. Professor Grant Hood tried to repair it without success.
The second clock was a collaborative effort that included Manual Arts Professor Charles Bennett. Bennett designed and built the weights, framework, heavy castings, and rough work, and Horology faculty and students made the machinery and escapements. For forty years the clock required manual winding twice a week. In 2011, Westlake received new clock faces along with a copper dome. It seems to be keeping time.
