All-School Dance photograph, 1951

Title

All-School Dance photograph, 1951

Description

This photo depicts the All-School Dance on January 4, 1951, at Hewitt Hall gymnasium. Hewitt Hall - now known as the Hartmann Center for the Performing Arts - represents the last gift from Lydia Moss Bradley to the institution. Lydia Moss Bradley funded its construction in response to student requests for an athletic facility. She passed away before its completion in 1908. Designed in a similar fashion to Bradley and Horology halls, the original building housed a gym, swimming pool, social hall, and locker rooms for both men and women. By the mid-1960s, the student body outgrew the facilities and began to petition the administration for a new gymnasium. After Haussler Hall replaced Hewitt Hall in 1975, the administration began planning for Hewitt’s renovation. In 1979, the renamed Hartmann Center opened, offering the campus a new theater and accompanying classrooms.
