The Wizards of A.I.D.S.: Aware Individuals Deserving Survival, 1992

Description

These photographs show the cast of The Wizards of A.I.D.S.: Aware Individuals Deserving Survival. In March of 1992, the Chicago-based theatre troupe Health Works performed a free musical comedy intended to educate Bradley's students about A.I.D.S. and safe sex practices. The play promoted compassion for afflicted individuals and on intimate matters, it encouraged both condom usage and abstinence. Whether students pondered the deeper meaning of the Wicked Witch of Unsafe Sex being smothered by a giant condom, they were talking about sex.

In 1992, Bradley’s campus was full of debate over contraceptives, especially condoms, and this was largely due to the AIDS epidemic. Some members of the student body wrote to The Scout promoting abstinence and opposing condom distribution on campus. The Student Senate approved a more popular measure to install condom machines in residence hall bathrooms. However, senior administration officials rejected this decision and implemented alternatives while barring the distribution of condoms on campus. Condoms were welcome on campus in 2009 and by 2011, condoms were being distributed in Residence Halls.
