Section of Field House floor, 1976
Title
Section of Field House floor, 1976
Description
In addition to being a fabulous piece of original art, this floor replaced the original Robertson Memorial Field House floor in 1976. The Field House served as the primary venue for sports and events on campus from 1947 to 2008. Following World War II, Bradley University answered the need for a new athletic facility by purchasing a war-surplus airplane hangar. Bradley's ticket-based fundraising plan brought in $370,000 to construct a second hangar and increase the facility's seating capacity. On December 17, 1949, the Field House was dedicated prior to a men's basketball game versus Purdue University.
Named for longtime coach and athletic director A.J. Robertson, the Field House served as the home of the Bradley men's basketball team until 1982 and hosted numerous concerts, speakers, entertainers, and campus ceremonies throughout the years. In 2008, the Field House was razed to make room for Renaissance Coliseum. Special Collections keeps a little piece of this history in the vault!
