Title

"Children of the Holocaust are remembered once more" newspaper article, 1997

Description

Student organizations bring life and learning to campus in many ways as evidenced by this Peoria Journal Star newspaper article featuring Hillel members Robyn Pierce '98, Sarah Oskin ‘99, and Sandra Mieli '99 at a Holocaust Remembrance Week event.

In 1962, the first Hillel House was established at 1320 W. St James St., close to 40 years after Rabbi Ben Franklin, a Peorian, helped to establish the organization at the University of Illinois in Champaign. Hillel House would later thrive in a variety of locations—including 828 N. University, 1410 W. Fredonia, 702 N. Duryea, and 1530 W. Fredonia. Allen Cannon, Kal Goldburg, Alan Galsky, and Seth Katz have all served as faculty advisors for Hillel since the 1940s. For current information, see:

Student members of Hillel have organized many commemorations of the Holocaust, including annual remembrances in April. Marion Blumenthal Lazan ’57 was a holocaust survivor who wrote the young adult book
Four Perfect Pebbles. Dr. Joy Erlichman Miller MA ’76 wrote her doctoral dissertation based on interviews with women survivors and later participated in Steven Spielberg’s oral history project, “Survivors of the Shoah.”

The creation of the Peoria Holocaust Memorial (
