Bradley University Bulletin: Statements on Athletic Policies, 1951

Title

Bradley University Bulletin: Statements on Athletic Policies, 1951

Description

Director of Athletics A.J. Bergstrom and Phillip Becker Jr., chairperson of the Faculty Committee on Physical Education and Athletics, published these statements in the October 1951 Bradley University Bulletin just weeks after news broke about the men's basketball point-shaving scandal. The scandal involved seven NCAA teams, including seven Bradley players, who had accepted bribes to fix games. Three Bradley players - Gene Melchiorre, George Chianakas, and William Mann - pled guilty to a misdemeanor, but the judge suspended their sentences. These statements demonstrate Bradley University's commitment to upholding NCAA standards of good and ethical sport. The pamphlet also warned against the "evil" of gambling.
